16 more pints of pickled beets, 6 of which are heart beets.
Next up: Asparagus if I can find some, raspberries, cherries, green beans, carrots, zucchini...

Tonight I am pickling the rest of the beets that weren't taken care of last week. Heart shaped, of course.
If anyone would like to join in some beet pickling and cheese eating (I just got some Cheshire with marmalade yesterday that looks pretty delicious) stop by with your favorite apron.

Elana and Chris are coming over today so that we may pickle and can 60 pounds of beets. If all goes well we'll get 20 or so pints each. This may be enough.
Looking at my cupboards in horror, I also am out of pickled carrots, have but two jars of dilly beans, and a single jar of delicious sweet zucchini pickles. I will be scheduling more big canning days should anyone have an interest.

This brightened an already very bright day:

A new tea shop opened on Monday in Bothell. I am going for tea on Saturday. Anyone who would like to come along should let me know, and I can call to reserve a table if we get to a sizable group.
Sadly, they close daily at 4pm, so this will not be my new favorite place. But i saw Harney & Sons Paris tea tins through the window, so I'll certainly be spending stooping by on Saturdays as tea supplies and desire for a cup of tea in a pleasant environment that is not my house dictate.

Kathryn wrote this up pretty well, so I'm just goingto re-direct:

In a nutshell, two bigger kids were being a bullies last week on the play gym Moira & Lillian were playing on, blocking the slide so the four little girls trying to use it couldn't. After asking nicely and Lillian calling for Kathryn and theboys still being bullies and blocking theslide, Moira announced that it was time for teamwork and led three other little girls to rush the boys and push them until they went down the slide. Pushing isn't nice, but asserting yourself and taking care of bigger bully boys instead of just giving up and accepting their BS is awesome.
I feel less badly about the Wonder Pets episodes I let her watch.

I would say more, but I am exhausted and have several more hours of work to do tonight, then up at 7am to start all over again. We fly home Saturday morning, so if I'm going to ride up the Eiffel Tower, tomorrow night is my opportunity. I also need to write postcards. I did see Notre Dame and the Louvre, and get my fancy tea from Marriage Freres. I have also eaten a bunch of crepers and pasteries.
Too much work, not enough Paris on this trip. I'd like to come back.

Evening walk in the area around our hotel (Le Walt) produced a lovely evening view of the Eiffel Tower, hot crepes at a street vendor, many fromageries and boulangeries I would like to go back and shop at, and dinner: Jerusalem Artichoke puree/soup with fresh cream and truffle oil followed by duck breast roasted with honey and a mushroom-apple ragout. Really, really delicious. We missed out on dessert, as Moira was really finished with sitting at the restaurant.
The fountain bent and straightened itself
In the night wind,
Blowing like a flower.
It gleamed and glittered,
A tall white lily,
Under the eye of the golden moon.
From a stone seat,
Beneath a blossoming lime,
The man watched it.
And the spray pattered
On the dim grass at his feet.
The fountain tossed its water,
Up and up, like silver marbles.
Is that an arm he sees?
And for one moment
Does he catch the moving curve
Of a thigh?
The fountain gurgled and splashed,
And the man's face was wet.
Is it singing that he hears?
A song of playing at ball?
The moonlight shines on the straight column of water,
And through it he sees a woman,
Tossing the water-balls.
Her breasts point outwards,
And the nipples are like buds of peonies.
Her flanks ripple as she plays,
And the water is not more undulating
Than the lines of her body.
"Come," she sings, "Poet!
Am I not more worth than your day ladies,
Covered with awkward stuffs,
Unreal, unbeautiful?
What do you fear in taking me?
Is not the night for poets?
I am your dream,
Recurrent as water,
Gemmed with the moon!"
She steps to the edge of the pool
And the water runs, rustling, down her sides.
She stretches out her arms,
And the fountain streams behind her
Like an opened veil.

In the morning the gardeners came to their work.
"There is something in the fountain," said one.
They shuddered as they laid their dead master
On the grass.
"I will close his eyes," said the head gardener,
"It is uncanny to see a dead man staring at the sun."

I want a red dress.
I want it flimsy and cheap,
I want it too tight, I want to wear it
until someone tears it off me.
I want it sleeveless and backless,
this dress, so no one has to guess
what's underneath. I want to walk down
the street past Thrifty's and the hardware store
with all those keys glittering in the window,
past Mr. and Mrs. Wong selling day-old
donuts in their café, past the Guerra brothers
slinging pigs from the truck and onto the dolly,
hoisting the slick snouts over their shoulders.
I want to walk like I'm the only
woman on earth and I can have my pick.
I want that red dress bad.
I want it to confirm
your worst fears about me,
to show you how little I care about you
or anything except what
I want. When I find it, I'll pull that garment
from its hanger like I'm choosing a body
to carry me into this world, through
the birth-cries and the love-cries too,
and I'll wear it like bones, like skin,
it'll be the goddamned
dress they bury me in.

The first seven (7) people to respond to this post will get something made by me.
This offer does have some restrictions and limitations:
- I make no guarantees that you will like what I make. I will not take requests.
- What I create will be just for you.
- It'll be done this year (2009).
- I will post a second post that will be screened for addresses and contact info.
The catch is that you have to put this in your journal as well, if you expect me to do something for you.
The seven people will be confirmed once they put this into their journals as well.
This may include things in jars, like jam or pickles, but could also be cake or calligraphy. You never know.

What says winter like the Lebkuchen-Schmidt Nurnberg Winter Chest 2008 full of lebkuchen? I've never tried it before and I can't entirely make out what any of it is, but it looks good and I was told in goes great with tea. It arrived in my office today from a co-worker in Europe and I'm going to have a fire tonight so I can eat some with a nice cup of Golden Assam. Mmmm.
I love thoughtful European co-workers.

"Mamma! I have the no trousers!"

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled in for a long winter’s nap.
There are a lot of people in the Pacific Northwest who don’t have a chimney to hang their stockings by, a warm bed to nestle snuggly into, or somewhere to settle for a long winter nap, except in bright pink tents in Nickelsville. And the current cold settling in makes those tents woefully inadequate.
Tim and I would like to invite you to participate in a holiday blanket drive to collect blankets (old ones, new ones; red ones, blue ones!) to benefit some of the members of our society hardest hit by the winter and help to make the season of lights a season of warmth, too. Let me know if you have a blanket to donate and I will collect them between now and Thursday to deliver Thursday evening.

I loved the outfit that Amanda Palmer wore at her show last night (it was an awesome show). You can kind of see it inthis video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40qVegVW wYg
I need an outfit just like that, but black or scarlett instead of gray.
